Participant code of conduct

The First Feature โ€“ Producer Lab is delivered by Mission Accomplished in partnership with The Fold, supported by the BFI Creative Challenge Fund, awarding National Lottery funding. This participation agreement outlines our promise to you and our expectations from you whilst you are enrolled on the Lab. Aims of the Lab

This First Feature - Producer Lab is designed to support emerging feature film producers to produce their first narrative feature. To help you achieve these aims, Mission Accomplished, together with our partners The Fold, will deliver an industry-led lab programme.

As a participant we ask that you:

  • Ensure you can attend all dates as described in the Lab Schedule.
  • Arrive on time for the start of the Lab.
  • Come ready to learn.
  • Make the most of the lab and opportunities provided.
  • Complete all assignments.
  • Meet all deadlines and produce work to a professional standard.
  • Treat others with kindness and respect and listen to their opinions.
  • Be mindful of the language that you use at all times.
  • Have high expectations of each other.
  • Take responsibility for your actions.
  • Look after your own property and that belonging to Mission Accomplished.
  • Avoid wearing clothing or accessories that may be interpreted as a political statement. This includes, but is not limited to, slogans, logos, or symbols that reference political parties, movements, or ideologies.

Confidentiality

The First Feature Producer Lab is a confidential space. All discussions and materials shared, including pitch decks, scripts and project documents, must be treated as strictly confidential and not shared or discussed outside the Lab without permission.

Protecting participants rights

We all have rights and responsibilities. Regardless of race, colour, creed, age, gender, personal challenges, physical abilities, location, or financial situation, we all share the same rights and responsibilities. Mission Accomplished aims to treat everyone with fairness and respect.
  • All participants have a right to be treated fairly and kindly.
  • All participants have a right to be treated as an individual in the room.
  • All participants have a right to feel safe in the room.
  • All participants have a right to express feelings and opinions sensibly, without fear of interruption or ridicule, and to ask questions if needed.
  • All participants have a right to be valued and respected.
Note: To maintain a safe learning environment, we reserve the right to deny entry or remove anyone we believe is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Our team have the right to challenge unacceptable behaviour in the room that affects the learning of others or challenges their role as instructors.

Attendance

Punctuality and full attendance are expected throughout this programme. We reserve the right to terminate your place on the lab due to lack of attendance.

Raising concerns

Should you have any concerns for yourself or any other participants during the Lab period, please report directly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) โ€“ you will be given their details upon commencement of this programme. By enrolling in this Producer Lab, you agree to these terms.

Producer Lab - Schedule

The Lab consists of a combination of in-person and online sessions, self-directed learning. You will be expected to complete work between workshops.

Please note: The schedule and session content are subject to change depending on leader availability and participant needs. Weโ€™ll always aim to give notice of any changes in advance.

Week commencing 9 March - Pre-Lab 1-2-1 sessions with Producers

Tuesday 17 March, 1330- 1700
- Session 1: Online - participants read decks for other projects
  • Welcome and introductions
  • The role of the producer.
  • What is expected of a producer when you move from development to production.
  • Packaging your project and ensuring it is market ready.
Week commencing 23 March - 1-2-1 sessions with Producers

Tuesday 24 March, 10.00 - 14.00
- Session 2: Online Overcoming Barriers to Production โ€“ exploring the key challenges that prevent projects from progressing beyond development, and practical strategies to navigate them:
  • Attaching a high-profile director.
  • Getting your existing director on the radar of financiers (where appropriate).
  • Engaging a casting director to attach prominent talent.
  • Securing a sales agent to provide estimates or pre-sell the film.
  • Reviewing the types of finance available.
Tuesday 31 March and Wednesday 1 April - 2 x full days - Session 3: In person, Birmingham
Case-study based sessions examining:
  • How different financiers work โ€“ what drives them and why they get involved.
  • De-mystifying film finance plans.
  • How different kinds of money work, with examples of recoupment waterfalls.
  • Sales and distribution โ€“ understanding where your project sits in the market and how to sell a film from packaging through to completion.
  • The pitching process.
  • Packaging your project.
  • The process of closing finance โ€“ walking through a Transaction Summary Sheet.
  • Moving from investor interest to cash in the bank โ€“ how to navigate this often opaque and stressful period.
  • An in-depth exploration of the information and documentation needed to close finance.
  • Next steps: preparing the materials required to push your film into production.
Mid point 1-2-1 session: Each producer will create a tailored action plan detailing their strategy and next steps toward production. This plan of action will be implemented by the producers, facilitated by the Lab leaders. Where requested, Lab leaders will make introductions to a selection of the following depending on the devised plan:
  • Casting Directors
  • Talent Agents
  • Sales Agents
  • Distributors
  • Financiers
Tuesday 14 April, 10.00 - 14.00 - Session 4: Online Guest speakers โ€“ guest producers who have recently completed their first feature film will be invited to speak about their journeys.

From 15 April - 1 June
- Producers to work on deliverables for Producer Lab. These deliverables will include a set of key materials that form part of a package that will be instrumental in helping the producer(s) convert the project from development to production. Each producer (or pair) will create:
  • A revised pitch deck
  • A finance plan
  • A bespoke recoupment waterfall
  • A strategic action plan detailing next steps for taking the project from development through to production.


Week commencing 1 June

Post-Cannes event and deadline for submission of deliverables (In person, London)
Final opportunity for Producers to come together, reflect on their learnings during the Lab as well as an opportunity to meet key industry players and network.


Week commencing 8 June

Final 1-2-1s with participants
The Lab leaders will review their deliverables prior to this final 1-2-1 session and will use the session to provide feedback and discuss next steps with the producer(s).

Sustainability Commitment โ€“ Participant Guidelines

We ask that all producers commit to participating in the Lab in a sustainable and environmentally responsible way.

Travel Responsibly
  • Choose low-carbon transport options wherever possible (e.g. train, coach, public transport, cycling, walking).
  • Car-share with other participants if driving is unavoidable.
  • Avoid domestic mainland flights at all costs.
Sustainable Meals
  • Select plant-based or vegetarian meal options.
  • Minimise food waste by only taking what you can eat.
Waste Reduction
  • Bring and use reusable items such as a water bottle and coffee cup.
  • Choose packaging-free or minimal-packaging snacks and products.
  • Use designated recycling and food waste bins at all Lab venues.
Low-Carbon Working Habits
  • Print only when necessary; choose digital documents where possible.
  • Use digital devices (laptop, tablet or digital notebook) instead of pen and paper.
  • Power off equipment, lights and devices when not in use.
Monitoring & Reporting
  • Support sustainability record keeping by providing details of travel, meals and consumption when requested.

Producer Lab โ€“ Participant Fees


The First Feature โ€“ Producer Lab recognises the challenges that producers face in bringing their first film to market and the unpaid time they put in. All producers on the Lab will be paid a participant fee of ยฃ1,020 towards the time spent on the programme.

If a producer fails to dedicate the time to the Producer Lab that is expected, Mission Accomplished reserves the right to reduce the fee accordingly.

The Participant Fee will be paid in two instalments:
  • 50% on enrolment and on attendance at the first online session.
  • 50% on completion of the Producer Lab and submission of all Deliverables.
Producers will be required to complete a Participant Fee request form in order for payments to be made. Mission Accomplished will pay participant fees within 14 days of their becoming due.

In addition, travel and accommodation costs will be paid for in-person activities in line with the BFI expenses guidance. A copy of which is available on request. Mission Accomplished will arrange all hotel rooms and participants will be asked to make their own travel arrangements to and from the in-person activities. Travel expenses can be reclaimed directly after purchase on submission of a claim form including copies of receipts and will be paid within 14 days.

Acknowledgement

I/we acknowledge that participation in the Programme has been made possible through National Lottery funding from the BFI.

I/we grant permission for Mission Accomplished, in partnership with The Fold and its funder, the BFI, to issue and authorise publicity regarding my/our involvement in the Producer Lab, including the publication of my/our name, brief biography, and Project name.

At the request of Mission Accomplished and The Fold, I/we will warmly and energetically acknowledge this support from the National Lottery and take opportunities to highlight the benefit derived by me/us from the Producer Lab. If the Project is made or produced, I/we agree to include the following end roller credit: โ€œDeveloped with Mission Accomplished in partnership with The Fold, supported by the BFI Filmmaking Fundโ€, followed by the BFI and National Lottery lock-up logo (or such other wording or logo as advised by the BFI Development Coordinator at the time).

Right of Termination

Mission Accomplished, in partnership with The Fold, as the Awardee, acting reasonably and at its sole discretion, may terminate an individualโ€™s participation in the Producer Lab and require reimbursement of participation costs (subject to BFI approval) if their behaviour falls below professional standards or brings the National Lottery, Mission Accomplished, The Fold, and/or the BFI or its programmes into disrepute.

Follow-up After Producer Lab

I/we understand and agree that following the Producer Lab, I/we may be required to participate in follow-up surveys conducted by the BFI and consent to Mission Accomplished, in partnership with The Fold, sharing data with the BFI to enable monitoring of my/our career progression and the progression of the Project.

Deliverables

I/we consent to Mission Accomplished in partnership with The Fold, providing the BFI with a copy of the Project Deliverables.

I/we warrant that:

  1. The Project is an original work (except to the extent it is in the public domain) or that the necessary rights have been optioned, licensed or acquired from the rights owners;
  2. I/we own the Project free from all charges, claims, liens or other encumbrances save in respect of those disclosed at application stage (such as in relation to any development financierโ€™s interest through prior funding);
  3. The Project does not infringe the copyright or, so far as the Participant is reasonably aware having undertaken due and diligent enquiry, any other personal or proprietary right of any person, firm or company or any statutory obligation;
  4. To the best of its knowledge and belief having made due and diligent enquiry, the Project is not defamatory or obscene and does not contain any matter constituting a breach of confidence;
  5. I/we will remain fully and solely responsible for the content for the Project;
  6. I/we agree that all scripts and other creative materials created by the Mission Accomplished, The Fold or other participants in the Producer Lab and used or shared in conjunction with the Producer Lab (Third Party Content) are confidential and shall not use, disclose, display, publish, transmit or otherwise make available such Third Party Content in whole or in part to any person or entity or copy, duplicate, replicate, transform or reproduce Third Party Content without the prior written consent of the Mission Accomplished and The Fold, and, where applicable, any other contributor to that Third Party Content.
