This free-to-attend course is designed to offer training and support in a wide range of Communication and Time Management strategies that are essential for production office and crew. Whether you are in the early stages of your career or stepping up to manage team members, this course is tailored to assist you in further developing your communication and time management abilities.

Whether you work in production office or as crew, you understand first-hand how crucial it is to communicate clearly, and to effectively manage your time. Effective communication is essential, especially when conveying complex messages and managing regular changes. Proper time management ensures that projects run smoothly and efficiently, minimizing delays and maximizing productivity.

This course aims to support 20 HETV professionals in enhancing their communication and time management strategies. The course is broken down into a series of modules covering different aspects of communication and time management.

The training style is interactive with scenarios and role plays, alongside taught materials. The modules will cover:

  • Communication Styles
  • Prioritisation
  • Delegation
  • Giving and Receiving Feedback
  • Negotiation Skills
  • Dealing with Difficult People
  • Motivation through Communication
  • Self and team care

The course is open to those living and/or regularly working in Northern Ireland who have a minimum of one years’ professional experience and at least one HETV production team credit.

This course is free to attend.

Please note that the duration of this training is split across two days and will take place in-person in Belfast. Eligible applicants will already be living and/or working in Northern Ireland so participants will be responsible for arranging their travel to and from the venue and, if necessary, any accommodation. In order to make this course accessible to the widest possible audience, there is some limited support available to contribute to these costs. Evidence of hardship will be requested.

WHO IS THE COURSE FOR? 

This training course is aimed at those who are working in the production office or as part of crew in HETV. You will have a minimum of one year’s experience and could be working in any HETV department.

We also wish to encourage those looking to return to work following a career break who have HETV experience and would like to refresh their skills and knowledge.

The training will take place in person over two days. Attendees must be available for both days of training.

  • Monday, 8th January 2024: 12:00 pm – 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday,  9th January 2024: 9:30 am – 4:00 pm

Training will take place in a Central Belfast location.

COURSE OUTLINE

Prior to attending all participants will be expected to have completed ScreenSkills e-learning modules in:

  • Tackling bullying and harassment
  • Mental health awareness
  • Inclusive hiring
  • Unconscious bias

By the end of the 2-day course participants will have developed their communication and time management strategies and feel more confident to use them in the workplace. They will have a series of strategies and tactics, as well as a padlet of useful resources, that they can deploy in different situations including:

  • An understanding of different communication styles and why this matters in communications
  • Prioritisation strategies
  • Enhanced time management tactics
  • Confidence to delegate without micromanaging
  • Strategies for giving feedback and bad news
  • Confidence to negotiate effectively with suppliers and crew
  • Recognising challenging behaviours and how to deal with them
  • Recognising when you and/or your team need support

This course is delivered by Film and TV Industry Professionals and sector experts

Alison Grade | Course Director

Alison runs Mission Accomplished and regularly delivers training for ScreenSkills. She is an experienced Line Producer and Production Manager as well as a Nesta Accredited Creative Enterprise Trainer. She regularly delivers training that enables creatives to take their careers to the next level.

Addie Orfila

Addie Orfila | Course Tutor

Addie has extensive production experience spanning over 25 years including ITV, All3Media and BBC. Starting as a trainee, Addie worked her way up as 3rd AD, 1st AD, PM and Head of Production. She has worked on all four of the big UK serial dramas and was HoP at Hollyoaks and Production Manager at Coronation Street. Having worked on shows such as Heartbeat, Touch of Frost, Countdown, My Parents are Aliens, Emmerdale, Barking and Jinx, Addie has a wealth of experience to draw from, is a mentor for Women in Film and Television, was a member of Channel 4’s Mentoring Diversity Network as well as trainer on the pan-industry Project Diamond Diversity monitoring scheme. Addie set up her own training company 7 years ago, delivering bespoke training nationally and internationally for production companies, broadcasters, studios, ScreenSkills, the Film and TV Charity, PACT, The Production Guild, Netflix, BBC, ITV, TRC, BECTU, Screen Yorkshire and others.

This course would normally cost participants £400, but thanks to funding from the ScreenSkills HETV Skills fund, it is currently being offered to you for free.

If you fail to attend, we reserve the right to request reimbursement of costs, unless your place can be taken by someone else.
